The Kaveh mega methanol project, being implemented in the Persian Gulf city of Bandar Dayyer, is 91% complete.
The facility is being built to produce two million tons of methanol per annum or 7,000 tons per day.
Minister of Petroleum Bijan Zanganeh visited the plant in September and hoped the project will be operational in the `10-Day Dawn' (February 1-10) celebrations, marking the anniversary of the 1979 Islamic Revolution of Iran.
Being rich in gas resources, Iran can be a forerunner in olefin production out of methanol if investing in such projects as MTO/NTP. The products will sharply increase methanol inside.
The plant is now undergoing final phases of construction. Once the new petrochemical projects are on stream, petrochemical output will increase.
Iran's total petrochemical output stood at more than 21 million tons by August 21 and to more than 24.958 million by October 21.
The petrochemical facilities in Mahshahr had a share of 8.663 million tons out of 24.958 million tons of Iranian total petrochemical output. The petchem facilities in Assalouyeh had a share of more than 11.451 million tons and other facilities in other parts of the country more than 4.84 million tons out of the bulk.
Future world will need a new fuel for the cars which is not pollutant and Methanol is the best choice.
Iran's methanol demand was mainly driven by the acetic acid sector. MTBE and DMT were the two other major methanol end-use markets. The major sector, acetic acid, is expected to witness significant growth in coming years.
Methanol is produced naturally in the anaerobic metabolism of many varieties of bacteria, and is ubiquitous in the environment. As a result, there is a small fraction of methanol vapor in the atmosphere. Over the course of several days, atmospheric methanol is oxidized with the help of sunlight to carbon dioxide and water. Currently, Iran has achieved 10% of the world's share in methanol production and its industrial exports are available in markets of 159 countries, mainly in Iraq, China, the UAE, India and South Korea.
