Blaze Fully Contained at Petchem Plant

TEHRAN, July 09 (Shana) – Managing director of National Petrochemical Company (NPC) says a blaze that gripped a petrochemical plant in southwestern Iran is fully contained.

Speaking with Shana, Marziyeh Shahdaei, who is also deputy petroleum minister in petrochemical affairs, said the feedstock kept in 2001C Storage Tank at the plant was emptied as a measure to extinguish the fire which began on Wednesday.

No casualties have been reported since the fire first started on Wednesday at Bou Ali Sina Petrochemical Plant at the hear of Mahshahr Petrochemical Complex in the southwestern province of Khouzestan.

The petrochemical plant is affiliated with Iranian state-owned National Petrochemical Company (NPC) but is owned by the Persian Gulf Petrochemical Industries Company (PGPIC).

The fire has been most likely caused by the paraxylene, a highly flammable hydrocarbon, leakage. Fire fighters extinguished the fire but the blaze re-erupted later in the day.
