CO2 Injection an Effective Method

TEHRAN Nov 1 (Shana)--Injection of carbon dioxide for enhancing recovery from hydrocarbon reservoirs is a profitable method, a senior researcher has said.

Mohammad Keramati, head of Reservoir Studies and Field Development Department of Research Institute of Petroleum Industry, said CO2 injection, despite being costly, has such advantages as the immiscibility of carbon dioxide and the possibility of enhancing recovery by 85%.

He said that the possibility of injecting CO2 would reduce the emission of this gas in favor of the environment.

Keramati said 90% of Iran’s hydrocarbon reservoirs could be fed with carbon dioxide because their pressure is above 2,000 ppm.

He said depleted oil and gas reservoirs, salt domes and active reservoirs are good options for CO2 injection.

Keramati said the oil layer of the supergiant offshore South Pars gas field is a good option because it is already producing CO2. Other good options include Fahlian, Sarvak and Asmari reservoirs.
