Special measures needed for reliable power plant fuel supply

SHANA (Tehran) – Deputy oil minister and CEO of the National Iranian Oil Refining and Distribution Company said stable fuel supplies for power plants in the coming winter will require special and swift measures due to challenges facing the country’s energy sector.

Speaking Monday on the sidelines of a meeting on energy supply for industries and power plants ahead of the summer and winter seasons, Mohammad-Sadeq Azimifar said close cooperation between the Oil Ministry and the Energy Ministry helped ensure a steady fuel supply for power plants in the past year, allowing the country to navigate the cold season without major disruptions.

Azimifar said the Parliament’s Energy Committee has held multiple meetings under the framework of the “Energy Imbalance Mitigation Headquarters” to review power plant fuel supplies and plan for future seasonal demand.

He noted that the energy sector faces exceptional circumstances this year because of damage to some energy facilities, particularly in South Pars gas field infrastructure and other gas installations, as well as parts of the petrochemical and steel industries.

“As a result, special and rapid measures are needed to manage energy supplies,” he said, emphasizing the importance of coordinated planning among relevant agencies to guarantee stable fuel deliveries to power plants during winter, when energy imbalances typically intensify.

Azimifar described power plant fuel supply as a cross-sector issue shared by the Oil Ministry and the Energy Ministry. He said the parliamentary Energy Committee plays a key role in coordinating efforts, monitoring commitments and ensuring implementation by the responsible organizations.

He added that the commission’s oversight of energy supply commitments has contributed to maintaining stability in the sector. According to Azimifar, the latest meeting produced positive conclusions, and the outcomes will be finalized and translated into operational measures during upcoming sessions.
