Gas efficiency drive gains momentum through operator companies

SHANA (Tehran) – Efforts to improve energy efficiency in natural gas consumption are advancing through the operator program, a government-backed initiative that brings private-sector expertise into energy-saving projects across the country.

Under the supervision of the Oil Ministry and the National Iranian Gas Company (NIGC), 22 contracts were signed last year with Operator companies to reduce energy waste and improve efficiency across residential, commercial, agricultural and industrial sectors. The program aims to cut energy consumption in targeted sectors by 25% to 35% through equipment upgrades, optimization projects and improved consumption patterns.

Mehdi Jamali, CEO of Behinesazan Sanat Tasisat Co., said the company has focused on fuel-efficiency projects, heating system performance improvements, energy management systems and technical standards development since its establishment.

Among the company’s key projects are boiler and burner optimization, building energy audits and labeling, energy management system deployment, and efficiency upgrades at gas pressure reduction stations.

Jamali identified a shortage of specialized personnel for planning, monitoring and evaluating optimization projects as one of the sector’s main challenges, stressing the need to strengthen technical and supervisory capacity.

He said the company has played a major role in the “Energy Pulse” public awareness campaign, which has attracted more than 450,000 participants through cooperation with leading universities, researchers, knowledge-based companies and nongovernmental organizations. The campaign seeks to achieve at least a 10% reduction in electricity and gas consumption through behavioral changes and public engagement.

Operational achievements include more than 1,900 burner optimization projects, upgrades to about 500 boiler rooms, replacement of over 7,000 heating units with high-efficiency models, and the retirement of more than 5,000 outdated heaters.

Looking ahead, Jamali said studies are underway to improve the efficiency of Neka Power Plant. Preliminary estimates indicate the project could add more than 200 megawatts of generating capacity while saving over 30 million cubic meters of natural gas annually. He emphasized that continued investment and stronger cooperation between government agencies, private companies and new technology-based firms will be critical to achieving Iran’s energy-efficiency goals.
