Smart contracts, public participation key to tackling energy imbalance

SHANA (Tehran) – The CEO of National Iranian Gas Company said Iran is relying on 77 strategic contracts with energy service companies and public cooperation to address the country’s energy consumption imbalance through smart technologies and efficiency measures.

According to the company, Saeid Tavakoli said in an interview with Radio Eqtesad that the NIGC maintains integrated management of the country’s gas network through its national gas dispatching center, while provincial energy-saving strategies vary depending on local consumption patterns.

Tavakoli said household and commercial sectors account for about 94% of energy consumption in northern provinces such as Mazandaran Province, while industrial demand dominates in provinces such as Qom Province.

He said gas consumption shifts heavily toward residential and commercial sectors during winter because of lower temperatures, adding that Iran’s extensive gas network requires special measures to ensure stable supply nationwide.

Tavakoli also said some infrastructure at the South Pars Gas Field was damaged during attacks by US and Israeli forces, creating challenges for part of the country’s gas production and processing capacity. He said the company sought to turn those threats into opportunities through improved management and efficiency measures.

The deputy oil minister for gas affairs said provincial authorities have been given greater responsibility for managing winter gas consumption based on local demand forecasts. Northern provinces, including Golestan Province and North Khorasan Province, as well as parts of northwestern Iran, are expected to face supply pressures during winter.

Tavakoli said the 77 contracts signed with operating companies are designed to improve coordination between gas producers, distributors and consumers. Verified gas savings will be rewarded through tradable energy-saving certificates on Iran’s energy exchange.

He added that authorities are also addressing illegal gas connections in provinces such as Alborz Province and expanding smart energy management systems for industrial bakeries, greenhouses and poultry farms.

Tavakoli said energy consumption in Iran remains higher than global averages and called on the public to support conservation efforts through behavioral changes and the use of energy-efficient heating equipment.

He added that the service companies are working with new technology-based firms to modernize boiler rooms and install smart electronic components and efficiency-enhancing devices to reduce gas consumption.
