Aghajari flare gas recovery project surpasses 60% completion

SHANA (Tehran) - The flare gas recovery project in the Aghajari oilfield has progressed more than 60%, with plans to virtually eliminate routine flaring in the area by the end of the Iranian year 1407 (March 2029), according to the head of the Aghajari Oil and Gas Production Company.

CEO Mohsen Dehbanpour said the company has aligned its operational and production plans with directives from the National Iranian Oil Company and the National Iranian South Oilfields Co. The plans include development, repair and rehabilitation work on wells, as well as upgrades to machinery, equipment and processing facilities to meet mandated production targets.
Dehbanpour said implementation has been satisfactory so far, adding that the company’s main priorities are meeting assigned production levels, stabilizing output and then increasing production within approved plans.
Flare gas recovery a strategic priority
Dehbanpour described flare gas recovery as a national priority, saying the company is pursuing the goal through several approaches, including leveraging investment from its main shareholder, Persian Gulf Holding, and attracting additional investors through tenders.
“Our target is that by the end of 1407, there will be no routine flaring in the Aghajari operational area except for technical necessities,” he said.
He said the flare gas recovery project in the Aghajari field is about 60% to 62% complete. In the Rag Sefid field, the commissioning of dehydration and pressure-boosting units has enabled the recovery of about 125 million cubic feet of flare gas, equivalent to roughly 60% to 70% of the field’s produced gas. Plans are in place to recover the remaining gas through tenders and the use of domestic capabilities.
Focus on efficiency and domestic capacity
Addressing efforts to improve efficiency, Dehbanpour said some factors are within the company’s control, while others are influenced by broader national conditions and sanctions. Despite these constraints, he said the company is prioritizing maximum use of domestic capabilities, including universities, knowledge-based firms and its skilled workforce.
He said several efficiency-driven corrective measures have helped stabilize and increase production. Among key projects is expanding the capacity of dehydration units at Rag Sefid, which could add 10,000 to 20,000 barrels per day to production. Completion of a salt unit and a degassing tank at the field is also planned.
Outlook and infrastructure projects
Dehbanpour said the future of the oil industry would be bright if modernization, enhanced oil recovery projects and gas supply for reservoir injection are prioritized at the national level.
He also cited a series of operational and infrastructure projects planned around the Fajr decade celebrations, including pipeline repairs, access road improvements and the launch of projects to facilitate access to oilfields.
Two water wells are under development to supply about 10,000 cubic meters of industrial and potable water for the company. A joint pipeline project with the provincial water company is also planned to transfer an additional 10,000 cubic meters of water to the city of Jayezan, contributing to corporate social responsibility and easing local water shortages.
Corporate social responsibility
Dehbanpour said attention to corporate social responsibility has become institutionalized in recent years across the Oil Ministry and its subsidiaries. He cited initiatives in health, education, culture and infrastructure, including donations of medical equipment to local clinics and hospitals, school renovations and support for cultural and national events.
He said these efforts have helped improve public satisfaction in the region.
Dehbanpour said the oil industry remains on the front line of Iran’s economic resilience, adding that strengthening the national economy is the most important factor in countering external pressures and that oil industry workers continue to support this effort at full capacity.
