43% of fueling now done with station cards

SHANA (Tehran) - Government spokesperson Fatemeh Mohajerani said 43 percent of recent fuel purchases have been made using station-issued fuel cards. She added that all revenue generated from higher gasoline prices applied through these cards will be directed toward supporting household livelihoods.

Speaking Wednesday in a televised interview, Mohajerani outlined details of the government’s decision to adjust gasoline prices, saying the measure is aimed at regulating fuel consumption. She noted that average daily gasoline use now reaches 133 million liters on normal days. Consumption exceeded 160 million liters during the Nowruz holidays and rose to 197 million liters during the recent 12-day conflict.
Mohajerani said the government remains committed to promoting fairness and improving living conditions. She said funds generated from the price increase applied to station free-use cards will be used directly for household support programs, including voucher-style assistance.
She reiterated that 43 percent of recent fuelings were conducted with station cards, adding that authorities believe a significant share of this volume is linked to smuggling. “The government must manage this issue while also improving livelihoods and ensuring access to medicine and health care,” she said. “This is why the recent decision was made.”
In response to a question about fuel quotas for ride-hailing taxis, Mohajerani said a working group established under the same directive will determine how such issues are handled.
Regarding newly registered vehicles, she said existing vehicles already have fuel cards. Buyers of previously registered cars will also have cards without issue. However, newly manufactured and newly registered vehicles will not automatically receive fuel quotas under the new policy.
Mohajerani said the government reached its decision after considering households’ economic conditions and the funding needed for essential goods, vouchers, medicine and health services. She said implementation details have been set by the working group and will be announced to the public.
