$800m allocated to modernize drilling equipment

SHANA (Tehran) – The National Iranian Oil Company (NIOC) has allocated $800 million to overhaul and modernize the drilling rigs and operational equipment of the National Iranian Drilling Company (NIDC), the company’s managing director announced.

According to NIDC, Hamid Bovard, NIOC’s managing director, made the remarks Thursday, Oct. 16, during a meeting with managers and officials of the drilling company. He praised the efforts of NIDC employees in advancing the goals of the country’s oil industry and said the company, as one of Iran’s major upstream contractors, must enhance its performance through effective planning, managerial reform and innovative solutions.

Bovard noted that the company’s operational performance during the first half of the current Iranian year showed significant growth in drilling, auxiliary services and logistical operations. “Given the oil industry’s plans to boost production and develop oil and gas fields, expectations from the NIDC are higher than ever,” he said, emphasizing the need to strengthen infrastructure and address existing challenges.

He added that NIDC enjoys strong human resources and substantial potential within the oil sector. “Through proper planning, innovation and the formation of strong executive and supervisory teams, the company can further increase its dynamism and efficiency,” he said.

Bovard also highlighted the $800 million allocation for rebuilding and upgrading the company’s drilling fleet and integrated technical and engineering service equipment. “Several agreements have been signed with domestic manufacturers and knowledge-based firms. With continued cooperation, synergy and follow-up, we expect to see a new era of modernization and a stronger presence of NIDC in the drilling industry,” he said.

Contracts signed with domestic manufacturers

During the same meeting, Mehran Makvandi, NIDC’s managing director, presented a report on the company’s 2025 performance and the progress of its fleet renovation and overhaul projects.

He said several contracts have been signed in recent months with major domestic firms to build and procure essential components such as main engines, drilling rig generators, and to refurbish existing rigs. “Our teams are actively following up to ensure timely completion of these projects and to enhance the quality and quantity of our drilling and engineering services,” he said.
