Iran sets new power plant gas consumption record at 27 bcm

SHANA (Tehran) – Power plants in Iran consumed more than 27 billion cubic meters of natural gas during the summer months, setting a new record in fuel supply.

According to data from the National Iranian Gas Company, daily gas deliveries to power plants averaged more than 290 million cubic meters in the three warm months, bringing total consumption above 27 billion cubic meters by the end of summer. The figure highlights the plants’ significant share of the nation’s gas use and reflects mounting demand for electricity, driven largely by widespread use of cooling systems, which put unprecedented pressure on the gas network.

On Sept. 9, power plants set a new daily consumption record of 329 million cubic meters, marking the peak of summer energy demand.

Experts warn that continued growth in gas use by power plants in future summers could pose challenges to the country’s stable fuel supply. They stress that improving plant efficiency, managing energy consumption and expanding renewable resources are essential measures to curb the rising trend.
