NIOPDC enjoys 16,000 road tankers in service; fleet stretches 176 kilometers

SHANA (Tehran) – The National Iranian Oil Products Distribution Company (NIOPDC) operates approximately 16,000 road tankers and 2,635 rail tankers. The company's road fleet, if lined up, would stretch about 176 kilometers—equivalent to the distance between Tehran and Amol or Chalus.

Given its critical role in fuel supply—especially during peak consumption periods like holidays and winter power plant demand—the company has decided to expand its transport fleet. This strategic move not only meets growing demand and improves service but also strengthens infrastructure, optimizes operations and supports sustainable development.

In 1403, the company significantly upgraded its fleet, adding over 2,500 road tankers and about 500 rail tankers. A modernization plan was also launched to improve efficiency and reduce fuel consumption, targeting 3,000 vehicles. These measures have boosted daily fuel transport capacity, enhanced supply to remote areas and cut operational costs. Modernization also improves road safety, reduces vehicle wear and lowers environmental pollution, benefiting urban air quality.

Ali-Akbar Arab-Ameri, the company's supply and distribution manager, said efforts in recent years have focused on expanding and improving the road and rail tanker fleet. "Our responsibility includes transporting fuel nationwide, covering both power plant and non-power plant shipments via road, rail, ships and pipelines," he said.

At the start of 1403, the company had 13,662 road tankers, a number that has since risen to around 16,000. These tankers transport fuel for power plants, logistical supplies and distribution centers.

Fuel storage for major consumers begins in May

Arab-Ameri also noted the expansion of the rail fleet, particularly for transporting fuel oil and gas oil. The number of rail tankers increased from 2,091 to 2,635 in 2024 through cooperation with the Ministry of Roads and Urban Development and the Islamic Republic of Iran Railway company.

"The increased fleet enables faster and more efficient fuel transport," he said.

Regarding 2025 plans, he said the company is awaiting refinery production updates to finalize additional tanker acquisitions. "In 1403, we signed agreements with automakers to add 3,500 new tankers, partly for fleet modernization," he added.

Fuel storage for major consumers, including power plants, will begin in May. "We hope these plans proceed smoothly to ensure timely, high-quality fuel supply," he said.
