Oil, gas exploration to resume in Persian Gulf after five years

SHANA (Tehran) – The head of exploration at the National Iranian Oil Company (NIOC) announced that offshore exploration had been halted since 1398 (2019) due to drilling rig limitations but expressed hope that operations would resume in the current Iranian year in shared border areas with neighboring countries.

Mohyeddin Jafari stated that over the six months of the second half of 1403, NIOC’s exploration team focused on critical research and operational phases. "Our goal, particularly under the current administration, is to thoroughly assess exploration progress over the past 30 years and plan accordingly," he said.

He emphasized that a key objective is to accelerate discovery rates by increasing the number of drilling rigs and deploying advanced geophysical equipment with support from the Oil Ministry. "Success in these areas could double our discovery speed," Jafari added.

Offshore exploration in Iran was suspended in 2019 due to rig shortages. However, with backing from the Oil Ministry, NIOC, and collaboration with the Iranian Offshore Oil Company, a tender was held, and a marine drilling contractor was selected.

"For the first time in five years, we’ve signed a contract for an offshore exploration rig," Jafari said. "We hope to begin operations in shared maritime border zones by 2025."

Regarding the Nowruz holiday and oil industry operations, Jafari noted that the sector operates continuously. "Our exploration teams work around the clock, even during holidays," he said.

Reflecting on personal sacrifices, Jafari shared, "In 1382 (2003), when my first child was born, I was at the Bibi Hakimeh exploration well and couldn’t be with my family. Such challenges are common, but our colleagues remain dedicated."

He thanked his team for their efforts, expressing hope for greater collaboration and future successes.
