Digitalizing supply chain, distribution of petroleum products important

SHANA (Tehran) – The operations manager of the National Iranian Oil Products Distribution Company (NIOPDC) identified fuel consumption management in the transportation sector as one of the main challenges facing the oil industry.

Ne'matollah Najafi stated that there is no logical correlation between the increase in fuel consumption and the production of petroleum products, emphasizing the need to transition toward digitalization.

Speaking at the specialized session on "Energy Economics and Smart Management of the Petroleum Products Supply Chain" during the Third Petrotech Conference on Sunday, Najafi announced that approximately 290 million liters of petroleum products are distributed daily in Iran. T

his includes an average daily distribution of 123 million liters of gasoline, 124 million liters of diesel, 4 million liters of kerosene, 6 million liters of aviation fuel, and 30 million liters of fuel oil.

Najafi reiterated that fuel consumption management in transportation is a critical issue, highlighting that Iran has 24 million vehicles and 6 million motorcycles. However, despite the increasing number of vehicles, fuel consumption does not follow a proportional growth pattern.

The operations manager stressed that the lack of a logical relationship between consumption growth and production indicates the continued reliance on manual systems, underscoring the necessity of moving toward digitalization.

Call for refining industry research megaprojects coming soon

Meanwhile, Mehdi Dejhosseini, research and technology director at the National Iranian Oil Refining and Distribution Company (NIORDC), noted that significant progress has been made in research and technology under the 14th government. He emphasized efforts to align industry standards with global benchmarks.

Dejhosseini stated that, under the Seventh Development Plan and its established targets, research and development (R&D) investment in state-owned companies should reach 2% of GDP by the end of the program. Achieving this goal would mark a major milestone.

He further announced that several megaprojects have been defined to address the challenges of the National Iranian Oil Refining and Distribution Company, with over 25 subprojects identified. A public call for proposals is expected to be issued soon.
