Producing one cubic meter of gas requires $8 investment

SHANA (Tehran) – Parliament Speaker Mohammad-Baqer Qalibaf emphasized on Thursday that producing one cubic meter of gas requires an $8 investment, but imbalances in the energy sector cannot be resolved through investment in production alone.

Speaking on the sidelines of the Planning and Development Council of Khorasan Razavi Province, he stressed the importance of conservation efforts.

“When the president requested a two-degree reduction in indoor temperatures, the public responded, resulting in daily savings of approximately 45 million cubic meters of gas,” Qalibaf said.

He also noted that Iran’s gas consumption is more than 2.5 times the global average, adding, “Addressing imbalances requires both production investments and conservation. We hope that through the implementation of replacement plans, everyone will contribute to fostering better energy-saving governance.”

Gas distribution management

Khorasan Razavi Governor General Gholamhossein Mozaffari expressed appreciation for the collaboration of various provincial entities in conserving gas.

“Fortunately, the National Iranian Gas Company has established effective cooperation with the province’s industrial sector, leading to significant achievements in gas distribution management,” he said.

Mozaffari added that while the province accounts for 8% of the national population and 7% of the country’s land area, its share of the gross domestic product is 5.5%, with its budget fluctuating between 5% and 6%.

Saved gas redirected to industry

Hassan Eftekhari, CEO of the Khorasan Razavi Gas Company, highlighted the implementation of a public gas consumption management initiative aimed at reducing household gas usage by 10% since last year.

“The saved gas is allocated to the province’s industrial sector, essentially channeling conserved household energy toward production,” he said.

Eftekhari expressed hope that replacing high-consumption appliances with efficient ones would further support energy-saving governance.

Addressing challenges in the eastern gas network caused by its distance from southern gas reserves, he said technical and cultural measures are being implemented to manage peak winter demand.

“The people of Khorasan Razavi have shown strong cooperation in conservation efforts. During the first cold wave of the past two weeks, they saved an average of 3.5 million cubic meters of gas per day,” Eftekhari said.
