First AI-powered fuel tanker unveiled in Iran

SHANA (Tehran) – The National Iranian Oil Products Distribution Company (NIOPDC) unveiled the country’s first road fuel tanker equipped with artificial intelligence technology, according to Ali-Asghar Abbasi, deputy managing director of the company.

Speaking about the development, Abbasi noted that over 320 million liters of oil products are transported daily across the country via rail, road, and sea networks.

He explained that NIOPDC is collaborating with domestic new technology-based firms (NTBFs) to monitor fuel from loading points, such as oil depots, by installing advanced equipment on tankers. These include electronic valves and GPS trackers capable of detecting any changes in the quality or quantity of the transported fuel.

Abbasi stated that several knowledge-based companies have expressed readiness to contribute to the project. Following trial phases, the equipment will be installed on the country’s transportation fleet.

Iran has over 16,350 road tankers, which Abbasi described as a testament to the scale and significance of the initiative, aligning with NIOPDC’s mission to serve consumers effectively.

He also mentioned that while implementing the "Sepahatan System"—a platform for fuel allocation based on travel distance—is not a direct responsibility of NIOPDC, the company's ongoing actions significantly contribute to achieving the system's objectives in the public transportation sector. If the Sepahatan System is fully realized, NIOPDC's efforts will align and advance in tandem with its goals.
