Iran, Iraq discuss expansion of energy ties

SHANA (Tehran) – Iran’s Oil Minister Javad Owji and visiting Iraqi Minister of Electricity Ziyad Ali Fazel explored all avenues to develop the two neighboring states’ relations in the energy sector on Wednesday night.

Owji exchanged views with Fazel and his deputy Adel Karim on exports of Iran’s gas and technical and engineering services to Iraq.

Joint investments and projects were also among the topics the two sides discussed.

Fazel arrived in Tehran on Wednesday to take part in the 23rd Iran International Electricity Exhibition (IEE 2023) and hold talks with Iranian officials.

In May, Owji and his Iraqi counterpart Hayan Abdel-Ghani signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) in Baghdad.

Based on the MoU inked in the presence of Iraq’s Prime Minister Mohammed Shia al-Sudani, the two sides agreed to cooperate in oil, gas, and petrochemical projects.

Owji and Sudani put emphasis on the expansion of bilateral cooperation in the energy sector, urging Iran-Iraq Joint Working Group to follow up the implementation of the recent memorandum through holding regular sessions.

The Iraqi prime minister brought forward proposals to develop joint fields, train human resources, and implement petrochemical projects, which were welcomed by the visiting Iranian oil minister.
