Syria’s territorial integrity is crucial and a military attack on Syria is harmful to Turkey and the region

TEHRAN (Shana) -- Recep Tayyip Erdogan, the President of Turkey, and his accompanying delegation met with Imam Khamenei on July 19, 2022. President Raisi was also present at the meeting. Speaking at the meeting, the Leader of the Islamic Revolution stressed the necessity to increase cooperation between the two countries, particularly in financial areas. He described the Zionist regime as being the main element in creating discord between Islamic countries.

While stressing that the US and the usurping Zionist regime cannot prevent the profound movement of the Palestinians, Imam Khamenei also spoke on the issue of Syria and said, “Preserving the territorial integrity of Syria is very important. Any military attack on Syria would be harmful to Syria, harmful to Turkey, and harmful to the region, and it would be to the benefit of the terrorists.”

The Leader of the Islamic Revolution stated that the current rate of economic cooperation between Iran and Turkey is much lower than existing capacities and said, “This issue must be resolved in the negotiations that are held between the presidents of the countries.”

The Leader also stated that the dignity and greatness of the Islamic Nation depend on moving past differences in taste and maintaining vigilance in the face of divisive policies. Furthermore, he said, “One of the factors that creates discord and hostility in the region is the usurping Zionist Regime, which is backed by the US.”

He described the Palestinian cause as being the number one issue in the world of Islam, “Despite certain governments’ interest in the Zionist regime, nations totally oppose this usurper.”

Imam Khamenei stressed that the US and the Zionist regime should not be relied on, and he added, “Today, neither the Zionist regime nor the US can prevent the Palestinians’ profound movement, and it will end to the benefit of the Palestinians.”

The Leader of the Islamic Revolution referred to the territorial integrity of Syria as being something very important. In referring to some reports regarding an attack on Syria, he said, “This would definitely be harmful to Syria, harmful to Turkey and harmful to the region, and it would not bring about the political move Turkey expects from the Syrian government either.”

In response to the President of Turkey expressing his hatred of terrorist groups, the Leader stated, “Terrorism must definitely be confronted, but a military attack on Syria will only benefit the terrorists. Of course, terrorists are not just a certain group.”

In response to the President of Turkey requesting that Iran cooperate on fighting against terrorist groups, the Leader of the Islamic Revolution stated, “We will certainly cooperate with Turkey in fighting terrorism.”

In emphasizing that Iran considers the security of Turkey and its borders to be its own security too, he told President Erdogan, “You should also consider Syria’s security to be your own security. Syria’s issues should be settled through negotiations. Iran, Turkey, Syria and Russia should settle these issues through dialogue.”

Expressing his satisfaction with the return of Karabakh to Azerbaijan, Imam Khamenei stated, “Of course, if there is a policy intended to block the Iran-Armenia border, the Islamic Republic will oppose it, for this border has been a connecting route for thousands of years.”

The Leader of the Islamic Revolution stated that an increase in cooperation between Iran and Turkey is beneficial and necessary in all areas. He also added, “We have always defended your administration on internal matters and against interventions. And as you mentioned, we are friends during difficult times, and we pray for the Muslim Turkish nation.”

President Erdogan expressed his congratulations on Eid al-Adha and Eid al-Ghadir and stated that the unity of the Islamic nation and an increase in the solidarity between Iran and Turkey are necessary. Furthermore, he said, “Turkey has never been silent about the transgressions against Iran, and the brotherhood that exists between Iran and Turkey must expand in all areas.”

The President of Turkey stressed that Turkey has always been and will always be opposed to unilateral sanctions against Iran. He said, “We will support Iran’s legitimate demands in the JCPOA, and we will encourage Turkish companies to invest in Iran.”

Referring to the involvement of Iran and Turkey in confronting terrorists over the course of many years, the President of Turkey said, “In Syria, western countries – including Germany, England, France and particularly the US - give massive arms support to terrorist groups.”

Recep Tayyip Erdogan stated that Turkey’s position regarding the territorial integrity of Syria is clear, and he added, “We expect the Syrian government to begin political procedures. At the Astana Summit, the issue of Syria will be discussed in particular, and we hope to achieve good results.”
