ISLAMABAD -- Iranian Foreign Minister Seyyed Kamal Kharrazi will pay a two-day visit to Pakistan from Monday during which the future of the proposed India-Iran gas pipeline via Pakistan is expected to be discussed.
Kharrazis visit takes place as part of high level consultation between two countries," a Pakistan Foreign Ministry statement in Islamabad said.
During his stay in Islamabad, Kharrazi would call on President Pervez Musharraf and Prime Minister Shaukat Aziz and hold formal talk with his counterpart Khurshid Mehmood Kasuri.
Though the statement made no reference to the pipeline project, it was expected to figure prominently as his visit taking place in the immediate backdrop of Iran-Pakistan Working Group meeting on the gas pipeline beginning in Tehran on Sunday.
Pakistan's Commerce Secretary Ahmed Waqar is taking part in the talks to discuss the fate of the USD 4.5 billion project covering about 2775 km including 760-km in Pakistan.
Indo-Pakistan Foreign Secretary level talks are also scheduled for 27-28 and Indian Foreign Secretary, Shyam Saran is already in Pakistan for the purpose.
The pipeline issue was expected to figure in the informal discussions between him and Pakistan officials.
Differences between India and Pakistan persist about how to go about the project.
Pakistan insists that it should be a stand-alone project and offered to provide full security.
