Iran's Energy Intensity Index 8 Times China

TEHRAN -- Director of education and information at Iran Energy Conservation Organization noted that energy intensity index in Iran was 8 times that of China.

Mohammad Hassan Zarbakhsh noted that studies show that nonproductive sector (household) in Iran accounts for the lion's share of energy consumption while in advanced countries most energy is used by industrial sector. The official noted that the latest studies in Iran show that energy consumption in the country is 40 percent for household sector and 27 percent for the industrial sector. "At the same time, energy consumption by the industrial sector accounts for 70 percent of total energy consumption in China and 50 percent of energy consumption in India," he noted. The official added that energy consumption model in Iran has increased the country's energy intensity index to 8 times that of China. "This means that in return for consuming eight units of energy in Iran only one dollar is produced in added value," he said. Zarbakhsh stated that the government has obliged industries to put an energy use sticker on home appliances in a bid to reduce energy consumption by household and commercial sectors while incentives and punishments have also been considered for the industrial sector.
