Mohammad-Hossein Daneshfar said the company had scheduled the drilling of an exploration well in the area for 2027.
According to KEPCO, the seismic survey covered an area of 2,500 square kilometers and involved the acquisition of about 853 kilometers of two-dimensional (2D) seismic lines. About 60% of the survey area was located onshore in the western Gorgan Plain, while the remaining 40% extended into the eastern Caspian Sea.
Daneshfar said seismic data acquisition was completed in May 2025. The data were subsequently processed using prestack time migration (PSTM) and prestack depth migration (PSDM) methods, with interpretation beginning in February 2026.
He said the project was carried out in cooperation with the exploration directorate of the National Iranian Oil Co. The processing and interpretation results led to the identification of several potential exploration structures in western Golestan province and Caspian Sea Block 13.
Based on the findings, KEPCO approved plans to drill an exploration well in the area in 2027, Daneshfar said.
He described the project's completion as a significant step toward identifying and exploring hydrocarbon resources in the eastern Caspian Sea transition zone.
The Caspian Sea remains a key area of interest for KEPCO's hydrocarbon exploration activities. Seismic surveys across onshore, offshore and transitional zones help identify geological structures with potential for hydrocarbon accumulation and determine suitable locations for exploratory drilling.
The company has also previously pursued a 2D seismic survey in the onshore-offshore transition zone of the eastern Caspian Sea to integrate exploration data across the southern Caspian basin and identify promising drilling locations.
