Tehran's Population Ceiling Set at 14.7m

TEHRAN -- The ceiling for population growth in Tehran has been set at 14.7 million up to 2021.

Yousef Hojjat, deputy head of Department of Environment for manpower affairs, told P.I.N. that the Energy Ministry has always emphasized that the population is outgrowing energy production and the ministry is only capable to supply 15 million people excluding low precipitation seasons. "A plan for the whole Tehran province has been drawn up, but despite two years of studies and removing objections raised by Majlis, the MPs have not approved it yet," he noted. The official noted that the year 2021 must not be considered as the end of Tehran's development, though the city may reach a standstill like many other big cities across the world. "According to the plan we are going to take 250 professions out of the city with the main reason being low employment and population burgeoning," he said. Hojjat said Management and Planning Organization was the main body in charge of drawing up the plan. "The most salient features of the plan include stopping industrial and developmental activities in big cities such as Tehran and Isfahan while international activities in such cities will go on," he said.
