Pipeline Explosion Halts Turkish Gas Imports from Iran

TEHRAN (Shana) – Turkish gas imports from Iran were halted due to an explosion in a natural gas pipeline inside Turkey near Iran’s Bazargan border with Turkey on Tuesday morning, National Iranian Gas Company (NIGC) said.

Mohammad Asgari, a spokesman for the NIGC, said the incident occurred at around 6:50 am Tuesday, May 31.

"During a phone call between the CEOs of the National Gas Company and the state-owned Turkish Butas Company, the matter was investigated and the CEO of the National Iranian Gas Company announced the company’s readiness to assist in the reconstruction and repairing of the pipeline by deploying forces and equipment,” Asgari said.

The pipeline carries around 10 billion cubic meters of Iranian gas to Turkey annually. It has been hit by terrorist attacks since the 1990s.
