Seizure of Iran Oil Tanker by UK against JCPOA: Spokesman

TEHRAN (Shana) – Spokesman of the Iranian Ministry of Foreign Affairs Abbas Mousavi said that seizure of the tanker that carried Iranian oil by the British marines was a violation of the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA).

Speaking to reporters on Monday, Mousavi said that Iran had raised the issue at the JCPOA joint commission as a violation of the deal on Sunday, adding that one of the issues considered in the commission was the tanker seizure which Iran regards as a violation of the nuclear deal.

Iran struck the deal with the P5+1 group of countries back in 2015 of which the US pulled out in May 2018.

Mousavi said that Iran held 1,500 miles of coasts in the Persian Gulf and had the longest coast in the Strait of Hormuz, making Iran the sole guarantor of security of the strait.

Mousavi also ruled out Oman’s brokerage efforts in ameliorating tensions concerning Iran and the strait over passage of oil vessels.

“We believe that if the security of the region and the Persian Gulf is to be guaranteed, there is no other alternative rather than cooperation and collaboration of countries,” he further said.
