Parl speaker: Cutting gasoline consumption is unavoidable

SHANA (Tehran) – Parliament Speaker Mohammad-Bagher Qalibaf said reducing gasoline consumption is no longer simply an economic necessity but an unavoidable requirement, warning that decisions on the issue cannot be delayed through vague rhetoric or impractical proposals.

Speaking in a virtual parliamentary session Tuesday, Qalibaf said Iran is seeking to secure its rights through a combination of diplomacy and military power, in line with measures set by the country's Leader.

He said the Strait of Hormuz will remain closed until the United States fulfills its commitments under an agreement, including lifting the blockade, releasing frozen Iranian assets, removing sanctions on oil exports and ending threats and military operations on all fronts.

Qalibaf then turned to the need to reduce gasoline consumption, saying the issue had previously been viewed as an economic necessity but has now become unavoidable.

"Decisions on reducing gasoline consumption cannot be postponed with general and seemingly attractive statements or impractical plans," he said.

However, Qalibaf said raising gasoline prices by the government would not be a well-calculated approach.

He called for measures that reduce gasoline consumption while ensuring the greatest possible fairness and minimizing public dissatisfaction. He also stressed the need to convince the public in order to prevent Iran's adversaries from exploiting the issue.

"If we can resolve the gasoline challenge through careful planning and national cooperation, we will have a significant impact on the enemy's efforts in its new plot," Qalibaf said. He added that such an outcome would force Iran's adversaries to conclude that they have no option but to accept the rights of the Iranian people.

Qalibaf urged lawmakers, experts and media professionals to contribute practical solutions during the policymaking process and to support whichever approach is ultimately approved after comprehensive review.

He also called for coordination and cooperation with the government during implementation.

"It is natural that the government, more than ever, should attach importance to hearing and acting on the views of experts and critics," he said.
