Fuel network restored in 72 hours after Rey facility attack

SHANA (Tehran) – Iran Oil Pipelines and Telecommunications Company (IOPTC) restored a major portion of the country’s fuel transmission capacity within 72 hours after an attack on the Rey oil storage and transfer facilities during recent 40-day conflict, according to Managing Director Ali Ahmadipour.

Ahmadipour said emergency response teams immediately launched pipeline reconnection operations and reconfigured the transmission network following the attack. Alternative routes were activated in less than three days, allowing fuel deliveries to northern and northeastern provinces to resume and helping avert a major supply disruption.

He noted that maintaining the highest possible level of petroleum product transfers across the national pipeline network remained a key priority throughout the conflicts of the past year. Efforts also focused on connecting power plants to the pipeline system to improve fuel supply reliability. Four power plants were linked to the network last year, and two additional facilities are scheduled to come online this year, increasing the total number of connected power plants to 28.

The company is also expanding the use of smart monitoring technologies, including fiber-optic Distributed Acoustic Sensing (DAS) systems designed to detect unauthorized activity, excavation work or potential threats near pipelines in real time. Two pilot projects are nearing completion, and the technology could eventually be deployed across Iran’s approximately 15,000-kilometer pipeline network.

Ahmadipour said continuous intelligent pipeline inspection programs have helped identify and address corrosion or technical issues before they develop into serious problems. No significant leaks or major damage were reported across the transmission network in 1404, he added.

Reconstruction of the damaged Rey facilities remains the company’s top priority in 1405. Engineering and operational teams are currently clearing debris and preparing the site for the installation of new equipment, with the goal of restoring transmission capacity to pre-conflict levels.

Ahmadipour praised operational personnel for maintaining fuel supplies under difficult conditions, saying their rapid response prevented a broader crisis and ensured uninterrupted energy distribution across large parts of the country.
