SPGC eyes gas flaring drop to 3 mcm per day

SHANA (Tehran) – The engineering manager of South Pars Gas Complex (SPGC) announced the reduction of flaring in the complex noting that the figure for daily gas flaring is targeted to decrease to 3 million cubic meters (mcm) by the end of the next Iranian year (March 20, 2027).

Mehdi Shafiei-Motahar told Shana on Sunday that the SPGC is keen on cutting pollution along with optimization of energy consumption.

Explaining on flare cut projects in SPGC refineries, the official stated that the plans are being done in two categories of “purchase and implementation” and “selling flare gases” under public sale framework.

He put the progress of the purchase and implementation projects at 80 percent which will be completed by yearend (March 20). Considering the said progress, the average daily flaring for the first nine months of the current year stood at about 6 mcm which is in compliance with short-term goals.

Talking on cutting flare project at the Refinery 9, Shafiei-Motahar stressed that according to decisions made by the SPGC, a 12-month credit, starting October 2025, has been dedicated to prepare some equipment, which is estimated to lower the current figure of flaring.

Efforts to solve legal challenges

The official announced that the total progress of projects on selling flare gases has hit about 36 percent, noting by the follow-ups made by Oil Ministry taskforce and with the steering by the Management of Coordination and Supervision on Production at the National Iranian Gas Company (NIGC), the projects will be extended with the removal of legal challenges.

Shafiei-Motahar estimated that the investors plans to be launched by the end of next Iranian year (March 20, 2027), where the daily flaring will drop to 3 mcm.

The engineering manager of SPGC concluded that the achievements are the indicative of his company’s will to reduce environmental pollution and energy use optimization.
