IOOC launches over150 first-of-a-kind research projects

SHANA (Tehran) – Iranian Offshore Oil Company (IOOC) has defined 154 first-of-a-kind research projects with support from the Vice Presidency for Science, Technology and the Knowledge-Based Economy, with more than 25 projects already approved for implementation, the company’s head of research and technology said.

According to the IOOC, Mehdi Tavakoli said the company’s research and technology unit focuses on solving complex offshore technical challenges at the lowest cost and highest efficiency while protecting the environment. He said the unit’s core capabilities include localizing strategic technologies, developing domestic innovations and turning ideas into marketable products.

Tavakoli said successful deployment of these innovations and technologies in the company’s offshore fields would significantly strengthen prospects for sustainable production. Given the complexity of the company’s fields in the Persian Gulf, he said the use of modern, knowledge-based methods offers a clear and confident outlook for long-term production stability.

Localizing Strategic Technologies

Tavakoli said technology development plays a critical role in improving offshore well productivity, adding that the research and technology unit is pursuing five key capability areas. Its primary mission, he said, is to advance exploration and production technologies for offshore fields.

The unit is seeking technical solutions to increase recovery rates, improve seismic surveying and interpretation of exploration data, design and optimize drilling methods in the Persian Gulf, and implement integrated reservoir management, he said.

A central focus is the localization of strategic technologies and reducing dependence on foreign suppliers, Tavakoli said. This includes designing and manufacturing operational parts and equipment, developing specialized oil and gas software, and advancing technologies related to offshore platforms.

He added that sustainable development and environmental protection are also priorities, including monitoring and controlling marine oil pollution, managing industrial waste and wastewater, and assessing the environmental impacts of projects.
