Great natural gas reserves, equivalent to 3.8 trillion cubic meters, were discovered in the Chinese province of Sichuan, 745 miles southwest of Beijing, giving it about 600 billion total cubic meters of reserves.

Until now the greatest Chinese gas deposits were in Sulige, Autonomous Region of Inner Mongolia, with exploitable reserves of some 533 billion cubic meters, local press reported on Monday.

In recent years, China has been increasingly finding rich gas deposits, and had 2.4 trillion cubic meters of exploitable reserves at the end of 2006, official data reported.

Authorities calculate an annual consumption in China of more than 100 billion cubic meters at the end of this decade, with production of 92 billion cubic meters expected in the same time frame.
