Barbados has agreed to import natural gas from Trinidad and Tobago, reported Elizabeth Thompson, the island nation"s energy and environment minister.

Thompson expressed the importance of the imported gas to Barbados, saying, "We believe there is scope for this project, even if there is a natural gas find in our territorial waters in the future."

Barbados"s new energy policy, Thompson said, "contemplates a shift" to the increased use of gas for domestic and commercial purposes. Currently Barbados uses diesel-fired electric power plants.

It is expected that manufacturers will switch to gas, she said, adding that the importation of gas from Trinidad and Tobago would ultimately lead to lower electricity prices.
