Meridian Resource Corp., Houston, said it is evaluating the merits of single lateral wells to develop Austin chalk oil and gas adjacent to Double A Wells Woodbine field in Polk County, southeast Texas.

The company flow-tested its Katherine Leary-1 well for several days at rates as high as 19.2 MMcfd of gas and 480 b/d of oil with 2,800 psi flowing tubing pressure on a 48/64-in. choke. The well was making 13 MMcfd and 460 b/d as of May 24.

Drilled vertically to 13,000 ft, the well has 5,300-ft and 5,600 ft laterals in the chalk. It is 2 miles northeast of the company"s Black Stone Minerals-1 well completed in late 2006 and 9 miles west of other Austin chalk wells.

Meridian Resource is drilling the BSM-2 and BSM-4 single-lateral wells nearby. The wells will test the merits of single laterals instead of dual laterals to improve drilling time and ultimate recovery at lower initial cost.

"Lease acreage positions and unitization designs determine, in part, the locations and decisions where this concept, if successful, can be applied," the company said.

Meridian Resource and partners hold 33,000 gross acres in the play, and Meridian Resource is completing title and documentation of another 20,000-plus gross acres, for a total of 50 locations. Two rigs are to work for the foreseeable future.

Meridian Resource is operator with 37-75% working interest.
