TEHRAN -- Vision 2025 stipulates that the country would need 18,000 kilometers of railway by 2011 to respond to its needs, whereas only 10,000 kilometers of main and side tracks have so far been laid.

Secretary of the Railroad Transportation Engineering Association, Abolfazl Bahredar said that adding 1,000 kilometers to railroad each year is fully feasible if financial issues do not hinder the process and if private investments are supported.

Aside from foreign currency credits, railway network needs at least 10 trillion rials to renovate and upgrade old railroad tracks of suburban trains, he added in an Isna report.

"Rail tracks in some parts are old and insecure, according to our standards. However, they are considered acceptable given their conditions and how often they are used," Bahredar opined.

The need to raise train speed is also another issue to be considered since only some routes, such as Tehran-Mashhad and Tehran-Zanjan, are capable of handling speeds of up to 160 km/h.

"Tehran-Ahvaz route, for instance, cannot handle speeds of over 120 km/h," Bahredar said.
