US drilling activity dipped to a 5-week low the week ended May 11, with 1,740 rotary rigs working, 7 less than the previous week but up from 1,627 during the same period a year ago, Baker Hughes Inc. reported.

All of the loss was in land operations, down by 11 rigs to 1,635 working. Inland-water drilling increased by 1 rig to 28. Offshore drilling was up by 3 rigs to 77 in US waters, including 76 in the Gulf of Mexico.

 

Among major producing states, Texas" rig count fell by 12 units to 819 drilling, while Oklahoma was down 4 to 182. New Mexico"s rig count increased by 4 to 78, and Louisiana gained 3 for a total 184 drilling. Colorado had 109 rigs working, 2 more than the previous week. Alaska"s rig count increased by 1 to 8. Wyoming and California were unchanged at 70 and 33, respectively.

 

The number of rigs drilling in Canada increased by 14 to 103, compared with 199 working during the same period last year.
