Iran to Form OPEC Olympics Organizing Committee

TEHRAN – Iran is set to set up an organizing committee on its own initiative to play host to the Olympic Games of the Organization of Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC) member states.

Petroleum Ministry’s sports chief made the statement in his talks with PIN Tuesday and added the ministry offered the proposal and President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad gave the go-ahead.

Mehdi Alinejad added Minister of Petroleum Seyed Kazem Vaziri-Hamaneh, Foreign Minister Manouchehr Mottaki, and President of Physical Education Organization (PEO) Mohammad Aliabadi would meet to form the committee.

“We have held negotiations with the PEO and the sports body has voiced its readiness to host the Games,” said the official, adding the Petroleum Ministry would play the role of financial sponsor and supervisor of the Olympic Games, if the sporting event got the nod.

Alinejad said the time and venue of the tourney would be decided later, reiterating that ministers of petroleum and foreign affairs and PEO head would study the organization of the meet.

“The committee is also duty-bound to hold a consultation with all OPEC member states,” he added.

OPEC comprises Iran, Saudi Arabia, Iraq, the United Arab Emirates, Qatar, Kuwait, Indonesia, Algeria, Venezuela, Angola, Libya, and Nigeria.
