TEHRAN – The waterfilling phase of Mamlu Reservoir Dam is going to kick off in February 2006, water affairs deputy of Energy Ministry Rasul Zargar said on Friday during a visit paid to the work yard of Mamlu located 40 km southwest of Tehran.

The dam, with the capacity of 250 million cubic meters, is the second reservoir this year to be filled by Tehran Regional Water Company. “The first, Taleqani Reservoir Dam, would be ready for waterfilling some time this spring,” Zargar had mentioned earlier last year. The three-reservoir Mamlu will be collecting portion of Jajrud and Damavand basins as well as managing torrent and flood waters to irrigate 64,000 hectares of Varamins agricultural lands plus supplying part of Tehrans drinking water. About 164 million cubic meters will go to the plain which is one of the most important agricultural poles in the country. Mamlu is an embankment dam of clay core which stands 89 meters tall, from foundation to crest, with an arch spread 807 meters long. It holds 24% more water than Karaj Dam, one of Tehrans main water sources, and is to be operational by September 2007. PIN/MNA
