Gov’t reviewing classification of petchem raw, semi-processed products

SHANA (Tehran) – The Iranian government is re-evaluating the list of petrochemical raw and semi-processed materials, the head of the National Petrochemical Company (NPC) said.

According to the NPC, Managing Director Hassan Abbaszadeh said that during a recent meeting between petrochemical industry executives and the president, participants discussed challenges in production and exports. The president emphasized the need to remove barriers and strengthen the country’s production capacity.

Abbaszadeh said follow-up meetings with relevant ministers will be held to review and decide on export and production issues through expert discussions. He added that the NPC has sent a list of key topics to the president’s office.

Special Working Group on Exports Formed

The deputy oil minister for petrochemical affairs said a special working group has been established to review export-related issues. The group includes representatives from petrochemical companies, the industry association, and related government agencies to make more practical decisions on export matters.

Abbaszadeh addressed criticism from downstream companies regarding the classification of raw and semi-processed petrochemical products and the resulting export duties. He said that in the list prepared by the Ministry of Industry, some products such as methanol and urea were labeled as semi-processed materials. “We believe urea is at the end of the production chain and should not be included in this list,” he said, adding that the government will re-examine the classification.

He also noted that the president has emphasized allocating a significant portion of companies’ social responsibility funds to promoting educational equity. “Petrochemical companies are to participate in a coordinated plan to equip and digitize schools across the country, enabling students to benefit from modern educational technologies and advance educational justice nationwide,” Abbaszadeh said.
