Five men, five nations, one idea

SHANA (Tehran) – The Secretariat of the Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC) marked the organization's 65th anniversary by paying tribute to its founders in a post on its official account.

The post, which included photos from the historic 1960 Baghdad Conference, stated: "Five men, five nations, one idea. The founding fathers of OPEC – Abdullah al-Tariki (Saudi Arabia), Juan Pablo Pérez Alfonzo (Venezuela), Dr. Talaat al-Sheibani (Iraq), Dr. Fuad Rouhani (Iran) and Ahmed Sayed Omar (Kuwait) – met not just as national representatives, but as visionaries committed to protecting national sovereignty over energy resources. Their legacy continues to empower global cooperation today."
The Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries was officially established Sept. 10-14, 1960, at the Al-Shaab Hall in Baghdad, with the participation of representatives from Iran, Iraq, Kuwait, Saudi Arabia and Venezuela.
