New step in North Yaran development with first electric rig

SHANA (Tehran) – The first trailer-mounted electric drilling rig has been installed and launched at one of the wells in the North Yaran shared oilfield, aiming to offset production declines and advance development plans.

According to the National Iranian Oil Company, Hossein Mohseni Zonouzi, project executor for the Yaran oilfield development, announced the unveiling of the first trailer-mounted electric rig during a ceremony on Monday (Aug. 4) attended by representatives from client and contractor companies in the Yaran operational zone.

He stated that the lightweight electric rig, an AC type with remote control capability (VFD) and trailer-mounted design, is one of very few such models in the country.

The main contractor, with approval from the Petroleum Engineering and Development Company, has purchased two of these rigs. Under the agreed terms, they will be used exclusively during the Yaran field’s development and production phase for installing and replacing downhole pumps and other maintenance operations.

Mohseni Zonouzi noted that Well No. 22, previously drilled to a depth of about 2,500 meters, is now set for production recovery following the installation of this rig and a new pump. He added that the well’s production decline will soon be compensated.

Each pump installation takes about 15 to 20 days, and the second rig will be deployed at another well in the field by late October, he said.

By the end of this year, the two rigs will be used to install 18 pumps across various wells in the Yaran field. Additionally, they may also be utilized in other projects in the West Karun region, with priority given to the Yaran field.

The Yaran shared field, located on the Iran-Iraq border, is one of the strategic fields under development by the Petroleum Engineering and Development Company. The installation of these rigs—part of scheduled development plans using domestic contractor capabilities—marks a key step toward sustaining and increasing oil production capacity in the field.
