FM: Russia gas exports to Iran on agenda during president’s visit

SHANA (Tehran) – The foreign minister outlined the president’s agenda for his visit to Russia, stating that significant negotiations will take place in several areas, including the export of Russian gas to Iran and its transit through Iran, which could position Iran as a regional energy and gas hub.

Speaking on Tuesday evening during a TV program, Abbas Araqchi emphasized that the president’s trips to Tajikistan and Russia align with the 14th administration’s policy of fostering good neighborly relations.

He noted that the visit to Tajikistan marks the first trip to the Eurasia region, highlighting the deep civilizational ties between the two countries.

Araqchi said, "Cultural affinities between us have been strong since ancient times and have grown significantly in recent years. We have been present and collaborated in various fields and projects in Tajikistan. Over the past three years, trade between the two countries has increased fivefold, demonstrating how economic cooperation is accelerating and following a very positive trajectory."

He added that, in addition to political meetings, several notable initiatives will take place during the visit, including a meeting between business leaders from both countries.

A large trade delegation is accompanying the president on this trip, a tradition that has been maintained in past presidential visits and continues to emphasize the importance of economic and private sector engagement.

Araqchi highlighted that an economic and trade forum will be held during the visit, featuring extensive discussions between business leaders and economic stakeholders from both sides.

The presidents of both countries will also participate in part of the forum, marking a significant step forward.

The foreign minister revealed that around 20 memorandums of understanding (MoUs) will be signed during the visit, the result of several years of negotiations between experts from both foreign ministries.

These MoUs cover areas such as trade, investment, water and electricity industries, technical and engineering services, transportation, tourism, academic studies, and facilitating people-to-people exchanges.

Araqchi stated, "We finalized these 20 documents over the past few months, and they will be signed during this visit."

He identified the signing of a comprehensive strategic partnership treaty between Iran and Russia as one of the most important objectives of the president’s visit to Moscow.

Araqchi noted, "A significant development during this trip will be the signing of the strategic partnership agreement between Iran and Russia."

Regarding other agenda items, Araqchi said that important negotiations will take place in several areas, including the export of Russian gas to Iran and its transit through Iran, which could establish Iran as a regional energy and gas hub.

He added, "Discussions are underway for the construction of gas and oil pipelines, a crucial project between Iran and Russia that we hope will advance during this visit."

Araghchi also mentioned the development of connectivity corridors between the two countries, noting that some sections have seen progress while others remain incomplete.
