Owji says Iran-Russia ties ‘have entered a new stage’

SHANA (Moscow) – Iranian Oil Minister Javad Owji on Wednesday said Tehran-Moscow ties “have entered a new stage” and the two sides are determined to deepen their relations.

He made the remarks in his meeting with Russian Deputy Prime Minister Alexander Novak on the sidelines of the 6th Russian Energy Week International Forum in Moscow.

During the session, which was also attended by Iran’s Ambassador Kazem Jalali and delegations of the two countries, Owji and Novak explored all avenues to promote Iran-Russia cooperation in oil, gas, and petrochemical sectors, carry out their contracts, and ink new economic cooperation documents.

Owji described the construction of the Rasht-Astara railway in Iran, which completes the North-South international transport corridor, as one of the important projects Iran and Russia are jointly executing, saying it will considerably increase the volume of economic and transit exchanges.

The Russian deputy prime minister, for his part, said, “The forum has provided an opportunity to discuss cooperation and agreements between OPEC+ member states.”

Completion of the western railway of the North-South corridor by Iran, Russia, and Azerbaijan, cooperation in international arena and OPEC+ alliance, and agendas of Iran-Russia Joint Economic Commission’s November meeting in Tehran were the other topics discussed during the session.

Owji and Novak, the heads of the commission, expressed hope that the road map for Iran-Russia technical and scientific cooperation in oil, gas, and electricity industries will be finalized and signed during the forum.

The Iranian minister is scheduled to deliver speech in a specialized meeting dubbed “Global Oil and Gas Market: Surveying a Turbulent Period” on Thursday.
