Owji: OPEC’s New Secretary General to be Elected by Next Month

TEHRAN (SHANA) – The new secretary general of the Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC) will be elected by next month, Iranian Minister of Petroleum, Javad Owji, said on Wednesday after the 182nd Meeting of the OPEC Conference.

We reviewed issues regarding management, administration and finance at the 182nd Meeting of OPEC Conference, he said.

We discussed electing OPEC’s new secretary general, he added, Mohammed Sanusi Barkindo’s tenure as OPEC secretary general is to end in August 2022.
The OPEC member countries were asked today to introduce their candidates by next month, the minister said. OPEC’s new secretary general will be elected by next month.

During the 182nd Meeting of the OPEC Conference, member countries appointed Congo’s hydrocarbons minister, Bruno Jean Richard Itoua, as the Chairman of the OPEC conference and Alaa Aliasari from Iraq was elected by the OPEC Board of Governors as the Chairman of the board in 2022.
