Iran no longer needs gasoline imports, Pezeshkian says

SHANA (Tehran) — Iran no longer needs to import gasoline, thanks to public cooperation in reducing fuel consumption, President Masoud Pezeshkian said Sunday, adding that all revenue generated by fuel price increases and savings from consumption management would be returned to the public.

Speaking at a meeting of the government’s Communications Council, Pezeshkian said building public trust and securing people’s cooperation would help protect the country against external threats.

Despite pressures and hardships caused by what he described as an enemy’s military and economic war, the government had mobilized its resources to protect livelihoods and ensure a steady supply of essential goods, he said.

Pezeshkian pointed to Iran’s high energy consumption and the challenges of securing fuel supplies under economic restrictions, saying the government had prioritized conservation and consumption management to prevent further energy shortages.

Public cooperation had resulted in significant fuel savings, he said, adding that Iran would otherwise have needed to spend $12 billion on gasoline imports.

He stressed that all revenue from fuel price increases, along with savings achieved through better consumption management, would be paid back to the people.

The president called on the media to encourage public participation in energy conservation, gasoline savings and efforts to strengthen national unity and social cohesion.

He also urged managers of government agencies and public organizations to encourage employees to reduce energy and fuel consumption through initiatives such as car-free Tuesdays, less reliance on private vehicles, improved workplace productivity and greater use of remote work.

Pezeshkian said government institutions, media organizations and public relations offices should work together to strengthen social solidarity and help people withstand hardships, pressure and threats from adversaries.
