North Korea to Hold Bilateral Meeting with US, Japan in Nuclear
Talks

Beijing -- North Korean and US delegations to the six party talks on Pyongyang's nuclear weapons program will hold bilateral talks Thursday, apparently to discuss a US proposal on how to resolve the issue, South Korean officials said.

"The US and North Korea will hold a bilateral meeting at 3:00 pm (0700 GMT) in the Diaoyutai State Guest House," a South Korean diplomat said. North Korea will also hold a bilateral meeting with Japan later Thursday, he said. Both the United States and North Korea proposed plans to move the talks forward during Wednesday's opening session of the third round of negotiations that also include Russia and hosts China. Senior US officials earlier said they would be willing to hold a bilateral meeting with the North Korean side in an effort to clarify the US proposal. The talks are aimed at dismantling North Korea's fledgling nuclear weapons program in exchange for diplomatic recognition and fuel and food aid for the starving Stalinist nation. PIn / AFP
