Expanding small power plants vital for a more efficient grid

SHANA (Tehran) – A member of the Parliamentary Energy Committee emphasized that expanding small-scale power plants is essential for reducing fuel consumption and strengthening the country's electricity network.

Ramezanali Sangdovini stated that converting gas-fired power plants into combined-cycle facilities is the most urgent step to improve efficiency and prevent fuel waste. He stressed that developing small-scale power plants with a range of capacities is not simply an option, but a necessity for enhancing grid resilience and reducing dependence on fossil fuels.

He noted that Iran's Seventh Development Plan includes clear provisions to accelerate the transition toward cleaner energy and improve energy efficiency. According to Sangdovini, many existing power plants rely solely on natural gas, and upgrading them to combined-cycle technology would significantly increase electricity generation efficiency while lowering fuel consumption.

Sangdovini added that the Parliament is prioritizing the expansion of solar and small-scale power plants because they can be deployed quickly and help decentralize electricity generation. He said that if the necessary infrastructure is established to connect these self-sufficient power plants to the national grid, a substantial portion of the country's energy supply imbalance could be resolved.

He concluded that by adopting modern technologies and implementing the industrial strategy outlined in the Seventh Development Plan, Iran can not only address its current energy challenges but also move toward a more sustainable and environmentally friendly pattern of energy production and consumption.
