Small-scale power plants key to cutting fuel use

SHANA (Tehran) – The Deputy Chairman of the Parliament’s Planning and Budget Committee emphasized the importance of expanding solar energy and small-scale power plants to strengthen electricity generation while reducing reliance on fossil fuels.

Qavami said the country must examine why it continues to face energy imbalances despite its existing resources, while spending billions of dollars each year on gasoline imports. He noted that one of the main reasons is that more than two-thirds of goods are transported by road, leading to excessive fuel consumption.

He added that completing the national railway infrastructure and connecting ports and industrial facilities to the rail network would significantly reduce energy imbalances and lower fossil fuel use.

Qavami also highlighted the role of small-scale power plants, particularly solar facilities, in improving the country's energy supply. He said expanding these plants with different capacities can help meet electricity demand while cutting fossil fuel consumption. He further explained that converting gas-fired power plants into combined-cycle facilities would increase efficiency, reduce fuel use, and generate electricity at a lower cost, helping address part of the country's energy challenges.

He concluded by stressing the need to adopt modern technologies and accelerate the transition to clean energy. According to Qavami, sound industrial policies and continued investment in infrastructure can help resolve many of the country's challenges in energy, production, and public finances.
