Haddad-Adel Voted Majlis Speaker

TEHRAN -- The new Iranian MPs elected Gholamali Haddad-Adel as parliament speaker for one year Sunday, making him the first non-cleric to fill the post since the 1979 Islamic Revolution.

Haddad-Adel, running as the sole contender for the post, won 226 votes from among the 259 ballots cast to preside over the 290-seat parliament or Majlis. The MPs also picked up other presiding members of the parliament, including Mohammed Reza Bahonar as the first deputy speaker and Mohammad Hassan Aboutorabi as the second deputy speaker. They mustered 188 and 173 votes respectively. Ahmad Nateq Nouri, Hassan Noiaghdam, and Mohsen Kouhkan garnered 183, 159 and 145 votes respectively to serve as commissioners to the Majlis Presiding Board. Hassan Sobhani, Hamidreza Hajbabai, Jahanbakhsh Mohebinia, Mousa Qorbani, Ahmad Moussavi and Alireza Zakani were elected as secretaries. Their votes were counted at respectively 163, 196, 146, 160, 181 and 171. They recite their oath at the parliament. Religious conservatives hold around 200 of the 290 seats in parliament after overturning the outgoing reformist majority in controversial February polls from which large numbers of their opponents were disqualified. Another 40 MPs have formed an independent bloc regarded as closer to the conservatives than the reformers.
