Iran, Russia eye stronger transit, trade links

SHANA (Tehran) — President Masoud Pezeshkian and Dmitry Medvedev, Russia's deputy chairman of the Security Council and special envoy of President Vladimir Putin, discussed expanding bilateral cooperation in energy, transportation and trade, while emphasizing the importance of accelerating implementation of existing agreements.

According to president.ir, Medvedev visited Tehran to attend ceremonies honoring Iran's martyred leader and conveyed condolences from Putin, as well as from the Russian government and people, over the martyrdoms of Iranian officials, military commanders, scientists and civilians, including children martyred in recent attacks.
Pezeshkian thanked Russia for its support and expressed appreciation for Moscow's solidarity with Iran. He described Iran-Russia ties as strategic and called for faster implementation of joint agreements to unlock the countries' economic, trade, energy and transit potential.
The president highlighted the International North-South Transport Corridor as a key pillar of bilateral cooperation, saying expanded transport and transit infrastructure would strengthen regional connectivity and serve the mutual interests of both countries.
He also stressed the importance of closer coordination through multilateral organizations, including the Shanghai Cooperation Organization, BRICS and the Eurasian Economic Union, urging both sides to make greater use of these frameworks to deepen economic and political cooperation.
Medvedev reaffirmed Moscow's commitment to fully implementing the Comprehensive Strategic Partnership Treaty between Russia and Iran and said Russia is determined to broaden cooperation across all areas of mutual interest.
He also condemned recent US and Israeli attacks against Iran, calling them violations of international law and the UN Charter that threaten regional and global peace and stability.
The Russian envoy said Moscow would continue supporting what it described as Iran's legitimate rights and interests in international forums, adding that countries opposed to unilateralism should strengthen coordination.
Medvedev also emphasized expanding monetary and financial cooperation between Tehran and Moscow, including greater use of national currencies in bilateral and multilateral trade and reducing reliance on the US dollar-based financial system. He said Russia is prepared to advance those initiatives with Iran.
