In a letter dated July 3 and addressed to Iran's Petroleum Minister Mohsen Paknejad, OPEC Secretary-General Haitham Al Ghais expressed "sincerest and most heartfelt condolences" to Iran's leadership and people during the period of profound national mourning.
Al Ghais said OPEC's thoughts and prayers were with the Iranian people as they commemorated the life and legacy of the Leader. He also extended condolences to Ayatollah Khamenei's family, expressing hope that they would find strength, comfort and solace during the difficult period.
The letter concluded by reaffirming the organization's sympathy with Iran and conveying Al Ghais' "highest consideration and esteem" to the Iranian petroleum minister.
Iran is one of OPEC's founding members and remains a key producer within the organization.
