Kharg oil terminal dismisses ‘fabricated’ pollution claims

SHANA (Tehran) – The CEO of the Iranian Oil Terminals Company dismissed reports alleging the presence of an oil slick near Kharg Island as fabricated, saying there has been no leakage from infrastructure, storage tanks, metering systems, jetties, pipelines in the area, or from vessels currently loading cargo.

Abbas Asadrouz said all energy infrastructure in the Persian Gulf is monitored by satellite, and that even the leakage of a single barrel of oil would be immediately detected and reported. He added that the Marine Emergency Mutual Aid Centre (MEMAC), operating on behalf of the International Maritime Organization, has also registered no report of pollution in the area.

Asadrouz said satellite reports and imagery normally include geographic coordinates, timestamps and approximate dimensions, while the images cited in the claims lack such precise details.

In addition to satellite monitoring, he said, all berthing and loading operations at the terminal are closely inspected by staff from start to finish to ensure there is not even the smallest leak.

Explaining the steps taken to review the claims, Asadrouz said that as soon as the reports emerged, specialist HSE teams, along with chemical and laboratory units, conducted comprehensive monitoring of the entire area but found no evidence of pollution.

Fabricated Claims by “Narrative Builders”

Citing meteorological data, Asadrouz said those promoting the claims allege the slick is moving out to sea, while prevailing northwesterly winds of about 20 knots are blowing toward the southeast. “If a slick existed, it should have moved toward the shore,” he said, adding that this contradiction demonstrates the falsity of the claims and the unreliability of the images published by foreign media.

Asadrouz noted that the Kharg oil terminal, one of the world’s most reputable terminals, operates in line with internationally recognized standards, including ISGOTT and OCIMF.

He said the terminal’s credibility is such that domestic and international customers take delivery of oil without requiring third-party verification, which he said reflects the integrity and high standards of its operational processes.
