Sharp temperature swings drive wide fluctuation in gas consumption

SHANA (Tehran) – Natural gas consumption in Iran’s residential, commercial and small industries sectors fluctuated by 325 million cubic meters in Bahman 1404 (Jan. 21-Feb. 19), reflecting significant temperature variations during the month. Early cold spells pushed demand to a peak of 737 million cubic meters, while relatively warmer conditions toward the end of the month reduced usage to 412 million cubic meters.

An analysis of consumption patterns for Bahman 1404 shows that despite intermittent volatility, the overall trend declined through the end of the month. However, given the typical winter shift in demand, the residential, commercial and small industries sectors continued to account for a substantial share of total gas deliveries.

According to daily consumption data, usage in these sectors experienced notable swings throughout the month. Demand began at a high level of 726 million cubic meters on the first day of Bahman and climbed to 737 million cubic meters on the second day, marking the highest single-day consumption recorded for these sectors this year. Consumption remained elevated on the third day at 715 million cubic meters.

As the month progressed and temperatures moderated somewhat, gas consumption followed a downward trajectory. By the final day of Bahman, demand had fallen by 325 million cubic meters to 412 million cubic meters, the lowest level recorded during the month. The decline underscores the direct impact of weather conditions on gas consumption patterns in these sectors.

Overall, more than 17 billion cubic meters of natural gas were consumed in Bahman 1404 by the residential, commercial and small industries sectors, highlighting their still-dominant share of the country’s total gas usage.
