TEHRAN – Oil and gas resources and implementation of relevant development projects constitute the bases for the activities of the National Iranian Oil Company (NIOC). Exploratory activities for crude and natural gas serves have been conducted in geological, geophysical and drilling fields in the past six years. They include 730,000 square kilometers of onshore and 195,000 square kilometers of offshore operations.
The exploratory activities in the past six years have yielded around 55 billion barrels of crude and gas condensates and more than 2,027 billion cubic meters of natural gas in 20 fields. Tabnak Gas Field, located in southern Fars province and holding sweet gas, is one of them.
The nominal capacity of Tabnak is estimated at over 857 billion cubic meters and exploratory operations in this region ended in discovery of the biggest sweet gas field in the country.
Development of Tabnak is aimed for production of up to 45 million cubic meters of gas and 21,000 barrels of gas condensates per day. The development project takes place in two phases; The first phase is supposed to produce and deliver 20 million cubic meters of gas and 10,000 barrels of gas condensates and the second stage will offer up to 45 million cubic meters of gas and 21,000 barrels of gas condensates per day.
The development project, handled by the Oil Engineering and Development Company, is expected to be over in several months.
Fars province is also home to Varavi, Shanol and Homa gas fields. The total reserves in Tabnak, Varavi, Shanol and Homa fields are estimated at 800 billion cubic meters of sweet gas and 595 million barrels of gas condensates.
Fars province would add 90 million cubic meters per day of gas and 38,000 barrels per day of gas condensates to the daily production in the country. Tabnak, alone, would account for more than 50% of the rise.
On the other hand, the first phase of Parsian Refinery in Fars province has come on stream to convert ethane and gas condensates to gasoline. According to the plans, refined gas from Tabnak would go from Parsian to Assaluyeh for injection to the national gas network.
Parsian Refinery will refine more than 55 million cubic meters per day of gas and 750,000 tons per annum of ethane for feeding “Olefin-10” unit and producing 2.4 million tons of liquefied gas and gasoline.
Iranian party accounts for 60% of credit allocation to development of Tabnak Gas Field. The credit has mainly gone to procurement and implementation. Jihad-e Nasr, Zir Assas, Bonyad Mashin and the National Iranian Drilling Company are involved in development of Tabnak.
A Chinese consortium known as CNPC has cooperated with NIDC in drilling operations. Naft Kish, Esperol and CMG are involved in studies for development of Tabnak Gas Field.
